Butterfly Shape Matching

Butterfly shape matching is a great way to have preschoolers practice shape recognition and matching. This activity includes fifteen shapes.

No matter what time of year it is, you can add this butterfly-themed activity to your preschool math center for a fun, hands-on way to practice shapes.

Preparing the Activity

Print, laminate, and prepare the activity. Cut apart the shape cards.

Place the shape cards in a stack facedown beside the butterfly mat.

Completing the Activity

Have children turn over a shape card and identify the shape of the chrysalis. Then, use a crayon (or dry erase marker if the page is laminated) to color the shape on the butterfly.

What Skills Are Taught?

  • visual discrimination
  • shape recognition (includes triangle, trapezoid, star, square, parallelogram, rectangle, pentagon, hexagon, oval, octagon, crescent, shield, circle, heart, diamond)
